The world is a will to power -- yes, but it is, more significantly, a means to depth. These means have the force of necessity behind them.

Truth, power and fantasy come together to produce the need for the means of depth. Life is already embedded in tectonics, it cannot afford to not sink deep roots.

The will to power could be reinterpreted as the means of depth.

I accept that but have no response to it at the moment.

(How deeply are we living our life?)

Yes, this is where the difference, the to Nietzsche quite puzzling difference, between power and the feeling of power (which is an equally hard motivator, just with different results) comes into its own.

There is also a will to surface. This is also a form of the will to power, but in the sense of the will to the feeling of power - the will to not be played out, made irrelevant by the existence of depth. Obviously, this is always manifest in popular opinion.

Indeed.
How capable are we of sustaining its inherent contradictions?

Tao is a means to sustain contradiction - this is why the path is crooked like a snake. Form one side to the other, blissfully, and blissfully back again. So we proceed, and wise up.

Really interesting insight here, I like this.

I see a tectonic depth/ness like roots from trees, every being is a little plant in a tectonics that grows downward for every bit it grows upward. Thus tectonic plates fuse together through the beings that arise from within them. The more fruitful and truthful/powerful/playful a plate is, the more it grows and fuses with more plates above and below itself. Earth is, apparently, a very truthful/powerful/playful plate.

In this ontology of depth/ness, "the will to power" would logically emerge as a combination of wills to depth and wills to surface (as you note). Surface willing becomes a means to avoiding harsh depth, just as depth becomes a means to avoiding harsh surfaces... but the necessity of depth is primary, because of the fact that depth is multi-planed and draws truths, powers and fantasies (thoughts, images, creations, "play") from the largest vantage when compared to less deep being/s.

"Dude, that's deep." Lul.

Yes it sounds absurd or at least easy to expose to obvious critiques of "dude... lols", but it is how it works. Perhaps truth is sometimes just too banal for the nobly aspiring human heart. Maybe "dudes" are otherwise noble hearts for whom the world is simply too banal even and especially in its most obvious truths, and in the face of that obviousness just decided to cozy up with some cynicism rather than "accept".

Acceptance leaves you vulnerable. Shields down, Borg ship approaching. Yes. This must be it.

Nicely said.

God is a means to depth.

Oh yeah, did I forget to mention? I am God.

Yes, you forgot to mention it. Didn't matter to me.

But if we live always at the surface we will never see the depth.
