What is the art of the diplomat as pathos?
Quite simple: Not to throw the first punch.

This is what makes encounters between diplomats so fun, yet incomprehensible to most.

Pezer, perhaps I'm misunderstanding you here but wouldn't the above point to reason and logic rather than pathos? Wouldn't it be those two that would act as a deterrent?

Pathos might come when all else failed and the diplomat appeals to someone's sense of decency and humanity (perhaps without actually using that terminology with them) by showing him his own humanity, needs and how reciprocation would work for both parties.

Hmmm...perhaps I'm thinking of a mediator here.
