I realized today finally what that ineffable thing is about Caracas that, despite all the murder and chaos, I became addicted to, and where my anarchistic tendencies spring from. Essentially, culturally, it is a city of children! Infant minded functioning "adults." This is the true reason for the violence and murder. Do we have any serious gangs? I doubt it. We have what are essentially the "no girls allowed" clubs you used to have as a kid, but with all the murderous power to fulfill your invariably bellicose experience, not to mention fund it.

"¡Bochinche, bochinche, esta gente es puro bochinche!"

Francisco de Miranda, one of our "founding fathers" (revolutionary warlords, as with you), the only true European enlightenment guy with civilized European progress in mind we had, a participant of the French revolution and reputed lover of the Russian queen, said this about the land he looked to "independize" or, as Bolívar coined, "liberate" after he lost a big battle and right before he was delivered to the Spanish by Bolívar et al. It means "infantile merrymaking, infantile merrymaking, this people is all infantile merrymaking!" Bólivar, as anybody that ever really had success here, had better luck because of his no bullshit, playground level violence.

Think about this: while the rest of our side of the continent was being subjected to harsh military dictatorships backed by the United States facists, we were happily selling them oil and getting fat on our happily corrupt, democratic government (which has owned the profits from all Venezuelan oil directly since like the 30's).

Oil prices went down there for a bit, but they picked up in time for our own socialist downer to take the stage, though you'll notice the leader was a rambling storry-teller with a light-hearted joy for life rather than an intense intellectual/millitary guy (though he was those things, too, a little bit). After him, nobody but the direct employees of the state really gives a shit about revolution anymore. Nobody is clamoring for more police or even usually better police ("whatever, that's life"), organazing into intent-driven civilized ventures, hating on life beyond the moment...

And more than party, we have better fun than anybody else in the world.  We have instincts honed for it after hundreds of years. Well, maybe we could debate Italians.
