| And it's certainly not the characters thoughts that drive his decisions, but the laws of thought as they apply to character directly. The character always is in transit. The thought is the arbiter of events, right and wrong are illustrated by the character's decisions. And as there are no decisions but only events, character is illuminated. At its own cost and to some stupid but profound immortal gain.

| But is this not the case with all writers? Well, no, even though there is always the pretence of some such decryption of reality into morality, there is never enough substantial experience of the denseness of an internal situation of an immortal character. One must be able to crack rocks with stares meant for goats to write a Russian novel and an Englishman better know to brave the ocean in a skooner and catch a whale. You just go out and do something. But what?
No novelists except some have found out for us. How to die means how to live, because -A does "equal" A.
Celine writes well to fever. He evokes a fever well. He is not a good man, that is clear, his despair is pure and his pleasures thus divine.

| I only finish a novel if there is a catharsis on the first page. If not the writer is poorly.
The Secret History is awesome. A true glimpse into "evil" as the Christian would hold it and without the fact dirtying the pleasures that harken back to Greece like a flame to air. The Catcher in the Rye has the most noble protagonist. I mean it really is very moving.

| I mean I now only read about one novel a year. The last one I read was by Stephen King, whom I hadn't read before. I also read a bunch of Dan Brown books in that year but these aren't novels, they don't amount to it, not even together, as they're the same, which is not quite a bad novel (not to be confused with not quite bad a novel, let alone not bad, quite a novel!). But Stephen King is pretty damned saucy. At least when it comes to beating wives and grabbing guys in the nuts. | |

| My estranged friend Vincent is right about things some things. He sees that birds are above him. And not many see this. A friend who sees things as above him and beholds himself from their height in divine (sardonic) mockery. Oh Zeus you ar cruel why did you take him to the danker Ionian isle.
Or is it he who is cruel who is not with ZEUS
