A young and very talented musician told me he wants to discovered US rap (he is learning English, only knew Spanish rap before). I told him I'd make him a good list, maybe you all can help.
I already recommended Biggy, Tupac, NWA, Wu Tang Clan, Mob Deep and NAS, who I consider the absolutely essencials. And Inmortal Technique, I'd like to recommended some really good ones who aren't well known.
I assume you want to stay away from Public Enemy for their politics. Maybe some instrumentals from them, some beats are truly classic, few rappers wouldn't know them. The guy who made them is called Terminator X.

Sentido him a first list up to Busta Rhymes and also added Kendrick Lamar, Suga Free and Dj Quik
Kanye, Snoop... Snoop is king of rap, when he is onstage he kills it without effort, rap incarnate, his history is the realest, his fellow gangsters pushed him out of crime to make music for them, a true bard. Bards in politics are always a bad idea, Im not defending any of that crap but he remains the guy in rap who will light up a place most effectively.
The Defiant Ones has a clip of Snoop in the studio with Dre for the first time, or one of the first times, thats almost scrary in rawness, he was unpolished then, his eyes pure darkness and completely cranked on strong weed as it does when you're 19, still cold as ice. He warmed up of course with all the recognition, and now he wants to be political but he isn't from Chicago. He said 'all my niggas and my bitches' and all the wold wants to be called nigga or bitch. A list cant leave him out. One of the few rappers that 2Pac could still look up to. One of the few that he never fucked with.

GNN was pretty awesome few time's I watched it.
Great list so far. This kid couldn't recieve a finer education.

Maybe some Gorillaz.
Also later: grime.
I had heard it in dubstep thinking it was recorded for that purpose but a guy in rehab showed me tje original stuff. Powerful stuff. One of few músics I don't allow myself to listen to anymore.
