Accessory comes from the Latin, accedere (1: to enter 2: to be admitted to 3: to gain access to 4: to accede to); so we find that accessories, as decorative apparatus (of one's person or otherwise) is a form of ritual or key, a token granting access or audience to/with something, somewhere, or someone. Thus the accessory is purely functional as opposed to purely aesthetic.
