'Mortal as I am, I know that I am born for a day. But when I follow at my pleasure the serried multitude of the stars in their circular course, my feet no longer touch the earth.'
I finished season 4 of The Wire. This was my third viewing, I enjoyed it more than the second time, as I am simply closer to the sort of values I derive out of this show. The season focussed on a school and young dudes coming of age in the ghetto, and it is stronger than any other show about youth. No glamour, only the choices about roles we face.
The other focus is on the mayoral elections, with a lot of good scenes for the character of the incumbent Mayor Royce.

The Wire creates the world The Shield fails to.
The first ep of The Shield was fucking brilliant. But I only watched the rest of the show to hope it eventually lived up to it. No dice. The scene where the mayor has to suck a guy's dick does live up, only other thing that stuck. That's the kind of shit real thugs do.

But they pull off the scene while maintaining the subjectivity of the viewer. Superb scene.

Anyway, maybe I'll watch the wire again. One fucking hell of a show.
I even watched the other New Orleans show the guy did. Pretty good too, New Orleans tasty. But obvsly not as good.

Right, Tremane, or - with Lester Freemont in it too and John Goodman - I couldn't get into it. I saw a different New Orleans, rougher to tell you the truth. But then I was there before Katrina, before it all became political.
I watched The Shield a lot when I was in LA, it is perfectly reflective of the city, unlike most shows or movies. It is a show about emotions, though. Not about gangsters - its hardness is in the epic endurance of the main characters and the tragedy that unfolds because of it.
Seven seasons of pure discipline.

The first ep shows a gangster of gangsters, a guy who uses a badge to rule the streets and make money while maintaining order. Because he loves it. He loves the money because it is part of the kingship. Ugh. Beautiful.
The rest of the show, obv, is not like that. Well made and all, a descent study of cockyness and those who fail to achieve cockyness.
Point taken about NO. But it's nice, more substance even than your regular HBO show.
I feel good about having hit rock bottom there of all places.
I disagree on the Shield though. I think that Vics decisions until the end, especially his last one, promise a world full of gangsterly enjoyment to come.
Its only then that the story really begins. thats what makes the whole show a great story. One of the few shows where I look forward to the last shot, the last moment to contemplate. the Wire closes off a bit like a bar on the early Sunday morning. Very fitting, but not genius. But it doesn't need to be genius at the end, it just winds down.
Vikings isn't even about good or bad, it is just actually Viking. As much as it concerns Ragnar. Something went quite right there.

Couldn't deal with the soapyness of Vikings. Too much talking and considering and posing. And everyone is misteriously clean and well trimmed and the girls seem to have carefully applied make up and they all look fresh and rested and misteriously fashionable.

The guy who made Drive also made a Viking movie. THAT's what viking lore is to me.

And the thing about The Shield is that Vic never has anything under control. I guess I see the appeal in that. But the first episode promised something very different.

I think the writers bit off more than they could chew. They weren't really capable of imagining the life of such a guy. Which is sad enough to almost be a tragedy. Which The Wire makes up for.

The writers for The Wire were so up to the task that they were just exhausted by the last season. True creativity fatigue from so much plunder. Deeply satisfying.

I'm gonna go watch a Keanu Reeves flick now. Exposed.
I admit it, I am a fan of Keanu Reeves. John Wick is the only one I've steared clear from. I can't wat h him go the way of Tom Cruise and the guy who kills a bunch of wolves, what's his name, scotsman... Whatever, the guy who's always saving his daughter and leaving a trail of dead bodies in his wake.
