Ive got the strong impression that he is consolidating Russia as the Asian superpower, having decided for some reason that he won't be

I can understand what Putin is doing, I think, and while it is sad, I don't think Trump is necessarily to blame here.
Also think that behind Putin, or, aside from him there are many powerful Russians that are not nearly as western minded as he.
This has always been the case, a lot of skeptic hardliners well prepared to start WWIII. Putin is now starting his last term and doing so half-heartedly, and has begun a big program of delegating his might -

Trump has made no problem over Crimea but Russia isn't doing anything in return. Syria isn't Russian property, the Kurds have been living there for thousands of years and the American alliance to them has been very noble.
