Universal basic income is probably the single stupidest idea I have ever heard. And not only because it is absolutely impractical and could never actually be implemented.

http://www.breitbart.com/national-security/2017/12/21/chinese-state-media-china-not-ready-head-on-competition-u-s/

Quote :
"The Chinese state Global Times newspaper published an opinion piece Wednesday sharply deviating from its typical belligerence against the United States, warning that “China is not ready” for competition with the U.S. and that Beijing “must learn from the U.S.” how to grow its economy.

Author Ai Jun’s article, “Is China ready to face direct competition with US?” responds to the title question with a resounding, “No.”

“It is time for China to start deliberating how to face up to direct competition with the US,” Ai advises. “Frankly speaking, China is not ready, since all it has been doing is focusing on its own development and its own growth.”"

Socialists will always hate a winner.
Fuck first term miracles, this man is still in his first year.

But this is really incredible. Really, it really is.
They abolished the Obolkopenality first. I have never seen government this good. Since Rome there hasn't been this much sanity in politics, seriously. And that was before human rights were even an issue. Now, this is just plain nice.

Right, and the tax plan which seems certain to become law is also going to be very good, based on what I have seen.

Agree. So far I have no complaints against Trump. He is trying to do what he said he would do. To me that is important.

Hard telling when he will sign the tax bill. He might want to make it a really, really special issue for maximum coverage.

It turns out Germany already has a 20% corporate tax rate but they were still complaining about Trump being evil for doing it... now they are expressing concern that the US will compete with them for jobs.

German pays its workers, also its specialized workers in the car industry, very little. This is why they are competitive. But it is a bubble.

Finally the US will make itself some money again.

Yep, all this is just too funny. Trump cracked the world in half, and the bullshit is leaking out for all to see.

I want to pose a question regarding the psychology of the 'globalist citizen': what is the effect of having no cultural, racial, religious, or national identity? Does this state of no-identity regarding these things that have traditionally been so important to human identity, does this lack make such a person more or less interesting? More or less likely to be intelligent, curious, well-reasoning, emotionally stable, courageous? I think it is genuinely interesting that a person can disavow these traditional identities to such a complete degree and merge with the consumerist postmodern self-ironic "identity" of the hipster type or however they want to be defined, and I am not automatically discounting this entirely as "bad". These people are anti-cultural, anti-racial, anti-religious, anti-national, yes... they have no "tribe" at all, although that is actually not true; they do have a tribe, the singular one that forces them to disavow every other tribe and allegiance. They are aligned to the globalist marxist postmodernist 'tribe', which functions so well as a tribe precisely because it has no coherent name or identity to easily point to.

Their tribal allegiance is bad, certainly, but I am often not in favor of things about cultures, racialism, religions, or nationalism because these things are often stupid, tedious, annoying and harmful. Also can be quite untruthful and just.... boring. At least the hipsters reject things on the basis of judging them as too boring, lol. But in a lack of identity new identities need to be found, this is what Nietzsche was talking about. These "global citizens" today, these brainless zombies shuffling through malls and pinching their iPhone screens while professing so intensely not to ever profess intensely about anything (except the current "cool" SJW cause of the moment) are just the rubble that truth has cleared for making space for the new identities that will replace the old ones. Globalism wants to be that identity, to give all the identities and sell us all the experiences and emotions fresh to download to our VR devices every day, but there is a surprisingly large resistance to this system they are trying to set up. Most people do not want their identities, most people just want to adhere to the identities they already have, and maybe find a new one or two; and then the army of globalist zombies, the hipsters, are too intellectually and emotionally defunct to actually be capable of forming an identity out of what their globalist masters are giving them... a nice irony right there. Also I suspect there is a mathematical law that prevents the size of that global-goo-army of zombie hipsters from getting too large. It simply cannot sustain itself as an ontic entity beyond a certain threshold.

Enter Trump. The globalist zombiearmy was not able to stop him because it was not able to have any firm identity in anything; just look at what Shillery's political platform stood for, it stood for... oh yeah that's right, it stood for literally nothing at all. This is the face of globalism now, is nothing more than the clearing away, the death pang, the forest fire struck by lightning. We should judge this current globalist goo by the army of zombies it is trying to create, even as it wants to embolden these zombies with new identities and make them "real people" so that globalism can become real as well; haha it just isn't working out for them, oh how sad. Sad Now we see through their veils by simply looking at their own cultivated drones. The more powerful one of their drones is, the more braindead and obviously programmed. The more natural-seeming one is, the more powerless and inept in every single area of life. Thus globalism is just what Nietzsche would probably call an early stage of the transvaluation, like the plow cutting into the hard spring earth to tear it up and soften it for the seed that will be dropped and covered over later. Globalism itself, this current globalism anyway, is just the hard soil being turned upright into the sun, by... haha by Trump, in this case. Trump is that plow. Hahaha. "Trump plows the world" might sit up there with "Trump grabbed the world by the pussy".

And of course when this all shakes out, we will simply step in and take over all of this globalist technology and infrastructure and knowledge and turn it to whatever ends we want. We will Value it, we will make it our own.. the earth will recycle it and turn it toward truth. This globalism, the EU, Gulag, NATO, whatever the fuck else, all of it is just going to pass away quite naturally, probably just as suddenly and naturally as the USSR passed away. We might not know the day it happens until it happens... the earth is quietly preparing herself for it, so that they can simply fall and nothing much will be disturbed. Trump is an agent of the earth.

In the meantime, let's try and figure out how to plant some seeds while the soil is still fresh.

I am even a lot less optimistic about the Hillary campaign and the people supporting it - it didn't stand for nothing but for cooking children and other forms of hell inflicted in the name of woman leadership. I think all her supporters are essentially psychopathic and genocidal maniacs. I see this also in terms of Parodites' genesis of human consciousness as something first mainly self-mutilating and horrible, cannibalistic and human-sacrificing like the Aztecs and such scum. I see the Hillary camp as such a kind of life-form. Protoconscious bloodthirst that can only be quenched by annihilation. I don't see either a possibility or a desirability of integrating these savages into the future world.

This all in the vein where I don't see "humanity" as a homogenous species, but rather as a field of dirt, or manure, from which different types of "plants" can grow. I am absolutely not of the same species as Clinton supporters, and I won't ever take kindly to the notion that I am.

The way I see it, Shillery is a symptom of the death that is spreading as a consequence of Nietzsche killing God, or rather of him identifying that God was already dead. Before transvaluation can occur the dirt must be tilled, all the dead things must fall and create a massive manure as you said, then Trump and others come and stir up the ground with great plows, while the new seeds take root. For example, the globalists with Gulag Fakebook and all the rest are trying to create the new forms of identity that will determine humanity in the future. This is what the entire history of technology has been about ever since television, technology is a kind of protoshaping identity-mechanism that we can self-value and thus take into our own hands the means for shaping the future of what identity will mean; so far only these globalist goo have figured this out, it seems, and have been trying to co-opt this otherwise quite human and earthy technology.

But as I was saying, they cannot wield it. It is like the sword in the stone, they simply cannot pull it free. The more they try to wield it to their ends the more it ends up furthering its own ends through them... like how the internet gave birth to Trump, or how the corporate media/Shill's tactic of blaming "fake news" instantly backfired on them and they became the fake news. There are probably thousands of such examples.

I have been looking into the abyss lately, and I see this all quite clearly. Technology will continue to progress until storytelling and fantasy collide with and begin to replace reality as we know it, that is simply the logical arc of all of this audiovisual tech. This arc has nothing to do with globalism or goo or anything else, it is a quite natural progression. But we must be among those who take these means into our own hands and fight for our values with them, infuse them with our values and temper them with our values. These technologies will simply be, in a way, further extensions of the current plague of postmodernism, namely if nothing else then at least a quite nice and obvious selection mechanism, a means of differentiating human types. And also a way to push humans to their upmost limits in terms of identity/consciousness as they finally realize they can actually self-value here if they want to.

Gulag/et al is betting on patenting all the new forms of identity and that everyone will simply fall into place in the virtual world of their control. Not so. The lessons we have learned by now regarding technology and the internet are quite clear; even if they try to split up the internet as I think they will do, giving each country or bloc control over a separate internet and establishing gatekeepers and filters between various internets, that will not work either. New forms of connection will grow, like neurons branching, like the roots of the tree growing around and through the rock. And in the end this has nothing to do with globalism or gulag or any of that shit, those are just remainders, small little excesses that will get wiped away soon enough once the earth is done with her great pregnancy. Nietzsche saw this all, I think. At least I am seeing it in his stead, where all this modern tech is concerned.

Some recent insights into Plato and thus Sokrates have revealed to me that Socialism thus Liberalism, is rooted in these perverts. The miserable path continues from 400 BC to this day.

Ive always instinctively loathed Plato, he not only is a very bad writer representing a very manipulative cunt, but his ideas are entirely anti-natural, in that they condemn very literally all that is real, all that is wholesome, all that is happy, all that turns out well.

Plato insists that happiness is a supernatural state not to be found though natural impulses. He is not only a christian avant la lettre but far worse, a Marxist avant la lettre. Marx merely copied his idiocies from Plato and from Thomas More's wretched "Utopia".

There is a whole lineage of anti-natural perverts in which Clunt is the latest abomination. All followers of such scum are scum themselves and are responsible for all kind of unimaginable atrocities. What none people don't realize most of the time is that they are sadistic at heart, and when they are among themselves and each other, they drop the pretence of "social justice" and merely talk about how to destroy people and how nice it is that this or that being suffers. They are good liars. It is what keeps them alive. Socrates is the most prolific liar of written history.

It is possible that for these scummy anti natural Socrarxists the world will be transformed where fantasy becomes a substitute for reality, but we will make sure on the ground that this won't be the case for real people. Real people walk in forests and climb mountains, or simply stroll through the city observing or pleasantly lost in pondering, have no need to be in constant company of a screen, or some device that will try to infiltrate the brain even further.

I read 80 percent of Chinese youths are nearsighted because of phones. I am sure this coincides with a short attention span and a lack of emotional depth.

Further, envy is the singular driving force of Socialists/Socrarxists. Combine lack of perceptive and experiential powers with envy, and you get the basic formula of Liberalism.

As I mentioned in my book-reviews recently, I discovered that Orwell is nothing less than a totalitarian Socialist, as dogmatic as your random village priest of whatever faith or denomination.

So he is much like Chomsky, in that he, in pretending to challenge power, offers ways for the masses to slip into its grasp while thinking they are fighting for their self-determination.

Still indeed, all of us benefit also from the increase in "will an representation" powers that technology means for us.
So it is not folly to conceive of ways in which a "World Fantasm" can be construed so as to support more basic reality, rather than subvert it.

Using Parodites’ idea of identity and adding some of my own analysis, difference is identified and conceptualized, and this conceptualization becomes a remainder within the overall mental/informational process because the two different things cannot be brought together and synthesized in such a way as to cancel out that difference and its conceptual representation; after a while there are countless such differentiations and the irreducibility between them all creates a tension that is held in place by our neurology, and this tension is a separate entity that shapes the very neurology that holds it in existence, so that a higher daemonic forms between this tension itself (the mental universe that we have created thus far in our lives) and the neurological structures that have formed in the image of this tension and that “materialize” the tension (ideas) or make it real in a physical sense.

To make an AI that is actually alive you just need to copy this structure in a computer, it shouldn’t be that hard. It would take a long time for that computer to amass enough experiences in order to start to generate an identity but it would definitely do that after a while.

Feelings are the “touch” sense applied to not just our physical organs but also to the mental contents themselves; experience including ideas is run parallel or subsequently through the part of the brain that produces the sensation of touch, and this gives us a model that feels like us but in a mental subjective sense. An AI could easily have such a system too, since the sense of touch is basically just a hard/impenetrable force that sets an absolute limit around some experience, so such a thing could be coded for, to basically self-limit the AI in this way and then tie that limitation into various aspects of its overall processing so that it ends up coming up against the hard limit of itself, and begins to “feel like” what it is.

So if the globalists and tech giants want to take over human subjectivity by controlling the production of identity, they will need to move away from their dialectical approach and adopt a daemonic one based on excess and limitation rather than on “averaging”. But as soon as they do that the task they have set themselves becomes a supremely human one, the earth takes over and usurps their projects. It would be the becoming-human of tech, and not the other way around as all the futurist transhumanist idiots and their postmodern correlates want. Basically we will see exactly what happened with the internet and Trump, with Pepe and deplorables, with “fake news”: once the globalists succeed in accurately identifying and projecting as their power something actually human, something based in the daemonic, this human aspect immediately takes it from them and makes it its own. Lol. This is the great irony in Marxism and dialectics generally, that it simply refutes itself to the degree that it is successful on its own terms. It is a closed loop.

Truth uses mere dialectics to propel itself forward in time and upward-outward into Being. That’s right bitches, we win.

A ~* R ~* T

Life is art. Thanks ‘globalists’ for making the canvas and paper and brushes and paints that we will use to destroy you// Lolz—>

It is just too funny, looking into the abyss and seeing these things. I know exactly what N meant with his comments about heights, cleanliness, mountain air... about the well from which no rabble can drink. We are waterfalls of truth and they just have to accept whatever we flow down to them, and they do, and the earth is us, so our flow is always pure.

This rulership is no joke.
It has cost enough too. But what it cost was only gold-plated shits.

Very nice that your gazing in the abyss yields these clarities such as this, rather than just foul looks from the abyss. LOl

Every Marxist system ultimately fails, and I do not just mean systems that came after Marx and are build directly upon his ideas, I mean any system that is based on the totalitarian notion of top-down control and lack of value to individual consciousness and the consent of the governed. Obviously "the governed" are just regular people many of whom are too stupid to actually govern anything, and yet this system is far more stable and works far better than the totalitarian Platonic philosopher kings ones... why? Well for one thing there are no philosopher kings ruling nations, and for another thing even if there were someone else less worthy would just usurp that person and take over, because this kind of political power is not natural and can easily be usurped by what is lower than itself. That is what happens when you create something unnatural, something against the logic of existence: you create something that represents a vacuum, a void, into which reality violently projects itself in order to fill that void with some substance. The violent tyrannical dictator who secretly kills the philosopher king and takes over his nation would be such a projection of reality filling in the void, because the entire concept of totalitarian top-down central control without principle to individual prioritization is constructing a logic so unnatural (where do you see such a logic in the natural world? Nowhere) that reality just sends some violent force in there to destabilize it.

In contrast, a more capitalist system based on individualization, locality, diffuse centers of power, tiers of stacked overlapping powers checked against each other, and ultimately all of that tied to a logical system of principle as law called a Constitution... this sort of system is far closer to what we see in the natural world. Most of the history of humanity has been a history of failure, because failed to establish such a system as a Constitutional capitalist one, but because that failure is a long, slow, and repeating one we don't recognize it as failure, we just call it "history". Lol.

Whatever is good (natural, rational, successful, sane) about a political system will endure as stable structure and pattern even through and above the shit, while whatever is not so good about a political system will die a slow, long death and that death will recur over and over in so far as these shitty political systems keep being re-enacted by humanity because humanity is generally too philosophically ignorant to do anything else. We are animals poisoned by self-consciousness, we took ourselves out of the natural world, and thus we must create what the natural world does "naturally", only problem is that generally speaking we suck at creating on this level because we have been too fucking stupid for too long. So humanity keeps making these shitty systems, keeps trying to form something stable out of our inadequate ideas, and what we make keeps falling down and destroying us. This recurs over and over and due to the complex nature of these systems takes a while for them to fall apart, therefore we delude ourselves into thinking that what we have build is something good, stable, true, and then we blame extraneous or circumstantial factors for its eventual collapse.

Historians are exactly like this, they will tell you "the reasons for the collapse of the X empire or nation", all the can do is try to find a list of causes. Haha. They are unable to view at the philosophical level of fate, of the mind and truth, therefore they do not see how these empires and nations were formed with inadequate ideas and faulty principles and were destined to fail. If it takes a doomed (because composed of an insufficient number of good/true/rational ideas) empire or nation 100 or 500 or 1000 years to fail, that doesn't mean such an empire or nation was "successful". Success or failure is determined only at the level of truth.

Consequently, whatever is good (rational, true, sane, useful, meaningful, not stupid) will endure, even as those specific political systems in which it has been articulated and instantiated fail over time. But we will notice that a new kind of nation will arise based on the fact that enough of these enduring truthful political ideas congregate in one place and exert a primary effect upon the political substances, forming them more and more to the will of truth. We saw this in the founding of America, and I believe we can also see it in the various European states to a lesser and more diffuse degree... basically America took what existed in diffuse form throughout Europe and concentrated it in one place, took all of these ideas, thought through them even more, elevated them to a new height, combined them all together and created a totally new kind of nation as a result. This is how truth works on the political level: the good ideas survive and eventually get collected together more and more, creating better thought-through ideas, which in turn create better political systems.

There is no historical mandate that every nation, government or civilization is ultimately doomed to eventual failure. Failure on the political level is simply the insufficiency of politics to truthful thinking. The collapse of a civilization is akin to the collapse of the entire natural world, not just to the collapse of an individual species... the individual species would be analogous to the individual person, these come and go by naturally selective logic while the larger natural world always continues to exist. The natural world is deeply rationally ordered, absolutely logical and in alignment with truth and reality, therefore it just keeps existing. Its machinery is pure. Humanity is trying to copy this mechanism, and is getting a little better at doing that over time. The very fact that political systems always exist and even when they fail another forms in its place, testifies to the fact that humanity is working in this deep domain of the truthful-rational that is where the natural world is also working in, except that our "natural worlds" keep collapsing and cannot survive for very long. We are God, creating natures and testing them to see if they can navigate reality successfully.

And even these Constitutional, principally individual-oriented, capitalist sort of political systems are, in those qualities of being Constitutional, individually-oriented and capitalistic, are often just establishing the conditions whereby it becomes more possible that humanity can think through the ideas in a more complete and comprehensive manner; these sort of more rational and sane political systems, capitalism for example, are just the conditions of possibility necessary for achieving a higher threshold of thought able to translate itself into the political sphere, so that there is a feedback loop between these better political systems and the ideas that make them possible and this sort of feedback loop does not exist in lesser (more irrational, insane, anti-natural) political systems. This feedback loop is a higher tectonic and establishes new daemonic potencies that act to buttress the political system against harsh reality, by generating a higher-order ontological state of being, and this is precisely what allows these political systems to be more rational as per their survival successes---namely they actually manage to have success in the area of survival, on the naturally selective level they can finally be selected for with regard to the 'genes' (the ideas) that are good about themselves.

What we call globalism today is just the continuation of the very same failure that has plagued politics forever, the failure to produce something truthful and thus something that reality can actually select-for. Every time it fails, the next iteration based on the same irrational ideas tries to push itself outward even more in a vain and merely linear analytic and meaningless attempt to ground itself more and more in reality, to make itself more stable, despite not realizing that adding more horizontal substance is not going to stabilize a being that lacks verticality. That is what globalism is, the end-result of the very same analytic-inane 'logic' that thinks it can make stupidity successful if only that stupidity grows large enough. Lol.... globalism in its current totalitarian anti-rational form will fail, just as every other irrational totalitarian political system eventually fails. It cannot survive, all it can do it die a protected death of illness and call that protracted death "surviving" for the simple reason that it was protracted.

Yes, this is the Marxist logic at work in the globalist world today, their core tenant: "a slow death = 'surviving' ". You can see this mirrored in nihilistic phrases like "to live is to die slowly" and all that nonsense. Haha. Too fucking funny, how these sub-entities merely express their own rationale. I am fine with them expressing what they are, for indeed they are nothing more than "dying slowly and calling that living", but we should never forget that when they say such things they are only describing themselves.

On ILP:

"We might say that the achievement of reality in politics happened first through Vladimir Putin. But this was Russian politics, which is a completely alien universe, compared to American politics. I, as a Dutchman, have much more to do with American politics than with Russian politics, at least in the sense of how my own government works, how it is embedded in financial structures that are shared across the West. In this financial paradigm, Trump is the first who is not a complete fantasy-image but an actual player, an agent, an actor. Not a play-act but someone who acts, does things, rather than merely saying things and having his handlers do the exact opposite, of which Obama was a shining example.

But about Russia and Putin. It is not entirely random that the crazies on the US tied Trump to Putin in their thinking, as both men actually are men, persons with a will, and a character (and a fate). They are both men that have worked "the machine" for their entire professional lives, and who managed, through unbelievably intelligent maneuvering and playing with magnificent skill and sensibility the apparatuses of their respective states, to manifest a position of leadership in their countries that had not existed in either of these countries for at least half a century.

What remains now, is the achievement of reality in European politics. I will carefully suggest something now: Russia is European nation. I mean, this is a fact, Petersburg and Moscow are European cities, the fertile black triangle (Chernozem) of Russia is European as well. Its authors are Europes most and best respected. And this has been Putins message as well: let us in, stop demonizing us, you are demonizing yourself.

I am not saying Europe should consider inviting Russia to be a EU member instead of Turkey, even though naturally it is infinitely preferable to have Russia as a member than Turkey - Russia raises cultural standards and military safety, where Turkey completely demolishes both. But the EU is not my favourite institution at all, so I won't advocate its expansion. However, it is necessity that Russia is accepted as a European nation, incidentally the one that beat back Hoitlorrr.

Ill put it stronger: Europe is nothing without Russia. It is not a continent without Russia, nor can there by a European society without Russia. It is the leading nation of the East, and all the countries with which the EU was expanded under Oinklish pressure are states that are cultural shadows of Russia, the only value of which for the EU establishment at that point was as bounty stolen from Russian realm. But that didn't work. Russia began to grow stronger, and Europe started to collapse. Some things you just can't change.

One of the first steps European leaders of industry must take now is to propose to further the plans Putin put forth for the intercontinental, Transsiberian, Transalaskan highway between London and New York. Vast, vast profits will be inevitable for all involved parties, profits economic as well as cultural. Such a highway could become a spine to an entirely new-born world of optimism and cultural advance.

The Russians were the first to put a man in space. They are the boldest nation under the Sun. Europe must be very thankful to have this power now wiling to do so much in service of its continent, which still needs to prove to be worthy of Russian favours and loyalty. And that would, as I see it, be the achievement of reality in European politics: to find a way in which Europe can remain Americas first ally as well as a continent that has Russia among its nations."

'A year of great battles': Polish prime minister Mateusz Morawiecki, left, with his Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orban in Budapest

JANUARY 3, 2018

When Poland and Hungary joined the EU together in 2004, they rode a wave of optimism about the eastward spread of Europe’s liberal values. But the two countries’ leaders now argue it is western Europe that has lost its way.

Meeting this week, the two respective heads of government made clear they would fight their corner this year in bruising disputes with Brussels over migration and money.

Mateusz Morawiecki arrived in Budapest on Wednesday for his first bilateral visit since his appointment as Poland’s prime minister in December. His meeting with his counterpart Viktor Orban underlined his government’s close links with conservative-nationalist allies in Hungary.

“I believe that like-minded nations like ourselves together can influence Europe’s future in a very positive way,” Mr Morawiecki said. A combative Mr Orban predicted 2018 would be a “year of great battles” against western Europe’s multicultural values.

“We don’t want to live in an empire but rather in an alliance of free nations,” he said, calling the EU’s migration policy a “spectacular failure” and saying Europe could only be strong by “preserving its Christian culture”.

The two countries’ multiple disagreements with EU policies add up to one of the largest challenges for a bloc that, in spite of a growing economic revival, is still shaking off the lingering effects of severe financial shocks over the past decade. EU leaders are also dealing with the UK’s impending exit and confronting populist pressures in other countries.

Poland was once seen as the EU’s most promising pupil in central and eastern Europe, enjoying transformative economic growth. But the country’s conservative-nationalist government led by the Law and Justice party has since 2016 unsettled EU allies by reshaping the country’s court system and public service media, mimicking Mr Orban’s transformation of Hungary’s political system.

At the same time, Mr Orban has galvanised opposition to the way the EU has dealt with an influx of refugees, further driving a wedge between the EU’s eastern and western members.

Both countries have joined forces to resist EU sanctions against Poland over judicial reforms, which Brussels has described as a “serious risk to the rule of law”. Poland’s government has adopted more than a dozen judicial reform laws and installed appointees in top court positions, arguing the previous system was vulnerable to “nepotism and corruption”.

There are a growing number of western countries suggesting tying EU funds to political conditions. Hungary and Poland are natural allies on this and they are preparing for a fight.

The relationship between Poland and Hungary was an “unprecedented test” for the EU because of its potential to thwart other member states’ agendas in areas ranging from migration to the rule of law, said Heather Grabbe, director of the Open Society European Policy Institute.

“They are seeking an alliance to fend off the EU,” she said. “That is something the EU has not seen before. EU members have always formed alliances and subgroups. But in the past those subgroups have usually been aiming for deeper integration. This is the first time that the EU has had . . . a subgroup that is rejecting solidarity on migration and burden-sharing.”

Poland and Hungary have formed a hardline axis within the Visegrad group — an informal caucus of four central and eastern European countries — against what they see as Brussels’ interference in immigration policy and constitutional issues.

But they differ on other issues — most notably relations with Russia — and their anti-Brussels rhetoric has unsettled the other two members, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Robert Fico, prime minister of Slovakia, which is a eurozone member, has said his country’s “vital interest” in the EU outweighs its regional ties.

Brussels has referred Budapest to the EU’s highest court over its refusal to accept refugee quotas, and over laws targeting civil society groups and universities with foreign links. And last month Brussels issued an unprecedented public rebuke over Poland’s alleged breaches of EU law and values. The European Commission for the first time invoked Article 7.1 of EU treaties, declaring “a serious risk to the rule of law” in Poland, after more than a year of fruitless dialogue with Warsaw over its judicial changes.

But following these steps with punishments — which under the Article 7 process would ultimately lead to suspending Warsaw’s voting rights — will be harder. Any attempt to impose sanctions on Poland would require unanimity among the union’s other 27 member states, including Hungary.

“It’s not even worth starting the process against Poland as there’s no chance of implementing it,” Mr Orban told a radio audience last month. “Hungary will be there and we will form a roadblock they cannot get around.”

No date has yet been set for EU member states to vote to approve the commission’s Article 7 declaration last month, and EU diplomats stress that they want to leave an opportunity to stop the crisis escalating, partly through a desire to avoid a destabilising internal rupture in the union but also reflecting a pragmatic acknowledgment of Hungary’s veto on political sanctions.

At the same time, the two countries face protracted negotiations with other member states this year over the EU’s next multi-annual budget, which could put in question their access to billions of euros in EU funds.

“There are a growing number of western countries suggesting tying EU funds to political conditions. Hungary and Poland are natural allies on this and they are preparing for a fight,” said Daniel Bartha, director of the Centre for Euro-Atlantic Integration and Democracy, a Budapest-based think-tank.

The recent tilt towards rightwing nationalism in Warsaw and Budapest has sparked particular concern in Germany. Berlin pushed hard for quick integration of eastern European states into the EU out of a sense of historic responsibility and a desire for stable and prosperous neighbours.

“Germany has some really tough disagreements with these countries but there are also many connections, both in economic terms and socially,” says Kai-Olaf Lang, a senior fellow at the SWP German Institute for International and Security Affairs. “That is why Germany does not want to see the creation of new division lines within Europe, for example by way of an excessively strong deepening of the eurozone. Berlin has a more inclusive approach.”

Wojciech Przybylski, editor of Visegrad Insight, said despite stark policy differences — most notably over relations with Russia, which Budapest favours — Mr Morawiecki’s visit had underlined Poland’s growing reliance on Hungary.

“Hungary has succeeded in dominating the regional perspective, due to the migration crisis. Now it benefits from Poland’s weakness; they need Hungary to protect them.”

On Wednesday, both countries were making common cause and stressing their unity. Mr Morawiecki said: “The dial is turning in our direction.”

Central Europe “stands on its own feet”, Mr Orban said. “It plays a stabilising role in Europe and we want to weigh in on the debate about the EU.”
